Carbon of a letter from Heath to Mr. and Mrs. John P. Stephens, Mount Vernon, New York.

August 22, 1957

Dear Mr. Stephens:

I often remember the pleasant evening I had with you and Mrs. Stephens some months ago. It was not only your domestic hospitality, but the exceeding hospitality of your two minds that was so stimulating to me, as were the extraordinarily intelligent responses that came from both of you. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Since a great deal that we talked about is set forth in my CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR, the coming-out party of which you were kind enough to attend, I am taking great pleasure in sending you an inscribed copy. I hope you will enjoy reading it, and that you will be pleased at the attempt I have made to bring about a synthesis between physical and biological science and the organic relationships among men in their societal integration. And, I feel sure that you will share my gratification at finding in these organic relationships a very high potentiality for the realization of human dreams and ideals. It is especially gratifying to me that the free enterprise principle, when extended into the field of community services and public affairs, will be an evolution virtually without resistance and create profits and values for all — and to an extent as far beyond our present dreams as aviation has developed from its crude beginnings on which I staked my all, and was not disappointed.

I am spending more of my time here in Maryland than for some time past, but I still keep the apartment at 11 Waverly Place and visit New York frequently. I do look forward to another evening with both of you — including some friends who may have taken an interest in the ideas of the book. If you ever visit Baltimore or should be traveling in that vicinity, please give me a ring at Elkridge 162-M. It would b delightful to have a visit from you for an afternoon or evening, perhaps even all night.

     With many warm wishes,

                            Cordially,

                            Spencer Heath
