Dear Dr. Greaves:
It seems quite a space of time since I had any contact with you. Your reference to Hugh P. King, I took pleasure in following up and found him much interested in possible re-writing of my TALE OF ONE CITY: THE ROMANCE OF REALTY, which seemed to tie in with some of his own special interests as well as picturing an objective embodiment of the social philosophy of my CITADL, MARKET AND ALTAR.
An army and an organism, while their functions are diametrically opposed, have a great deal in common so far as their organization is concerned. Each is composed of many highly specialized departments and parts. And whatever the over-all function may be, there must always be reciprocal and harmonious relationships among the parts of which it is composed.
The same is true of all the institutions of mankind. Science, art, religion, economics and public affairs are separate but interfunctioning departments of the societal whole. That is why I found it possible to base an understanding of the social and economic scene on the firm foundation of physical and biological science, and to find inherently in it the essential foundation of everything towards which we artistically and spiritually aspire.
Feeling that you are among those who can rightly appraise this synthetic approach, I take great pleasure in presenting to you with my compliments a copy of my recently published CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR. I trust you will enjoy reading it and that you will be stimulated — perhaps also hopefully inspired — by some of its unusual points of view.
Cordially yours,
SH/m
