Carbon of a letter from Heath to C. John Westhof, Edmund, Oklahoma.
March 24, 1958
Dear Dr. Westhof:
I hope it is not too late for me to express my gratitude for your fine appreciation of my CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR, as shown by your review in Christian Economics, a copy of which you were so kind as to send me before its publication. When one has happily put so much effort into a profoundly important and but little explored field, it is heartening indeed to know that it has evoked such a wonderful response, even though it be from but few who are similarly inspired.
I think the New Testament in some ways is the most beautiful poetry in the world; its beauty is what makes it inspired. I often think that the aesthetic is the most inspiring, the most divine, element in human nature — that the divinity of mankind rests in his creative power, which is always greatest when he is inspired by the sense of beauty above and beyond what is personal and immediate to him. Even the scientific materialist seems to pursue his discoveries under an inspiration of beauty that he is often disposed to deny.
I am happy to say that the response of foreign publications has been gratifying. Generous reviews have been received from what seem to be leading publications in London, Dublin, Rome, The Hague, Dusseldorf, Buenos Aires and Bogota.
If you would like to have a few copies of CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR and/or my “Practice of Christian Freedom,” for use among prospectively appreciative acquaintances or friends, I shall be very happy to have some of them sent to you for that purpose.
Again thanking you and in hearty good fellowship, I remain
Sincerely yours,
Spencer Heath
