Carbon of a letter from Heath to J. M. Barker, 7447 Skokie Boulevard, Skokie, Illinois

May 10, 1957

Dear Mr. Barker:

I appreciate the trouble you have taken to write me such an interesting letter after reading my comments on Dr. Ohmann’s article reprinted from The Harvard Business Review.

I am inclined to accept what you say with reference to Dr. Ohmann with your apparent realization that my comments were based exclusively upon his article itself and what it seems to import.

I am, in fact, happy to know that Dr. Ohmann is more of a protagonist of free enterprise than his article would lead one to suppose. I do like your recognition that the advantages of efficiency with respect to material necessities and needs are very great. And doubtless you will agree with me that this making of good terms with the necessitous side of life liberates the human energy for the creative expression of spontaneous spirit and mind, even though the transition is as yet far from complete.

I hope Dr. Ohmann will continue in his pursuit of “skyhooks” and that his further investigations will result in some unequivocal discovery of the value and beauty which only an efficient technology can make possible for all.

Again thanking you for your kind letter, I am

Sincerely yours,

SH/m
