Carbon of a letter from Heath to Russell Kirk, Mecosta, Michigan
1959
Dear Russell Kirk:
With many other things on my mind and time, this Christmas card business has got me down this year. So I am just writing a few personal notes and will have to let it go at that.
I must tell you, however, that I have greatly enjoyed your article on “norms,” which I like to think of as those modes of thought and of behavior which, though dimly perceived and little understood, have through the ages contributed to the security and advancement of mankind — the things that have endured in time because they serve life.
I think you will be happy to note that my Citadel, Market and Altar has met with some cordial reception both here and abroad, as indicated by the printed matter enclosed, although it has had but little general circulation as yet.
I hope the world-political situation has not been discouraging to you, in view of the long-term movements in history which constitute the general trend.
It has been a pleasure to know you personally, as well as in thought. I hope our paths may cross many times.
Sincerely,
SH/sm
