Item 1774
Verbatim note by Spencer MacCallum of Heath’s reply to his question, while discussing habeas corpus, as to why a lawyer should be willing to defend a client whom he believes to be guilty.
July 1956
“If an accused person has no rights, then no one is safe — because anyone can be accused.”
/Heath then added, in substance, that this was a principle worked out in England alone, and long fought for there, but no record of it on the Continent of Europe./
