Pencil jottings inserted in the index, perhaps as a bookmark, of Charles Coulston Gillispie, Genesis and Geology (Cambridge University of Harvard Press, 1951)
In history, thought follows action.
Experience is the subject-matter of understanding.
Thought is the child of action.
Sentiment is the heart’s immediate and naive reaction to vicissitude.
The sciences today were the mysteries of yesterday.
In the natural sciences the dreams of yesterday are commonplaces today.
/For proposed letter:/
I have been reading and re-reading your book, Genesis and Geology. I want to thank you for it. It is a rare accomplishment of gracious intellectual reporting and philosophic interpretation. But the title falls far short of doing it justice.
