Carbon of a letter from Heath to E. Merrill Root, R.R. #1, North Grosvenordale, Conn.

Dear Dr. Root:

 

     Many thanks for your warm letter of October seventh.

 

     It is interesting to know that you are so far East and entranced by the autumn glory of the Berkshire Hills, despite the urgent concentration of your present work. I do hope you will not too much burn the candle at both ends, but if you do, I am sure it will make a “lovely light.” Poetry has been called — and, I think, justly — the mother of science, being of the Spirit which science, at its best, can do no more than serve.

 

     My own arrangements keep me here in Maryland until the 24^th, but I will be in New York (11 Waverly Place, Gramercy 7-9060) for at least a fortnight after that.

 

     If, in your passing by or through, your travel schedule should permit, I should be most happy to have at least a handshake with you, or with “you-all,” as the Southrons say when including more than one.

 

     In any event, I expect to see you January 22^nd at the Alliance meeting, whate’er now befalls.
