A penned letter from Heath in Montreal to his daughter Marguerite and son-in-law Merton C. McConkey, 11731 Charlevoix Avenue, Detroit, Michigan.

September 1, 1940

Dear Marguerite and Merton,

I’ve been wondering a lot about you all. Hope you had a nice August and are all set for a nice fall and winter. Tell me about it.

I saw Mr. Palmer quite a lot in New York and he still hoped to have Merton in the H. G. School work. I certainly hope Merton will go in for that — on the side of his regular work.

I’ve been giving the H. G. people here my ideas right in the raw and they seem to stand up to it very well. I had a small group of McGill professors at their Friendly Club Lunch yesterday and made a lot of headway with them. — Hardly a speck of opposition and much interest and inquiry.

Praise Henry George a lot for the constructive part of his writings and remember all the time that the fundamental of it is to let rent be the recompense for all public services and that all relations shall be free and contractual — none of them coercive.

Give my love to Enid and best wishes for her school and art work ’n’ everythin’

Drop me a line by the 6th or 7th to Woodstock Hotel, 127 W 43d St NYC. Mark it “Please Hold.”

Heaps love,

Papa, S.H. and Popdaddy

Scold Elizabeth for never writing to me and give her my love.
