Item 1955
Penned letter to his daughter, Marguerite McConkey.
December 18, 1939
Dearest Marguerite –
It is hardly possible for me to come out there on such short notice or before the middle of January. I’ve made arrangements to be in New York and Princeton.
I certainly am sorry you and Merton haven’t been able to reconcile your feelings about religion and such things.
True religion is always an integrating, a reconciling, a binding force and influence. It has nothing to do with right or wrong, except so far as some things are beautiful and inspiring and others are not.
You better write me as well as you can so I can know how you feel and what you seem most to need and desire. Nothing can be best for one of you that is not best for all. I feel sure Merton will gladly cooperate on this principle in every possible way.
I’m sorry I can’t see you right away. But you tell me all you can and I will do all I can for you until I see you.
Love to all,
Papa
