Penned notes for a letter to Bolton Hall, c/o Robert Schalkenbach Foundation, 11 Park Place, New York City
August 2, 1934
Original is in item 1978.
It has been noised about that the good fairies who sometimes have a magic to stay the hand of time have met in merry conclave and proclaimed that, whereas Sunday, August 5th, 1934, will mark for you the fullness of fourscore devoted and creative years, fruitful alike of things needful to be known that men’s bodies may be sustained and of things to be felt and dreamed that their souls may be worthy of transcendent life, it is resolved that this day be set apart for special rejoicing and thanksgiving by all those to whom come intimations of the grandeur that will rise in the works and ways of men and the beauty that will bloom when they shall have learned to draw the thorns and loose the bonds that bear men down while life abundant beckons them.
I feel it an honor to myself and a fitting signal of my own devotion to the cause for which you have so long and nobly stood that I join in the grateful rejoicing that marks this happy fullness of your years.
