Dear Crawford
During the last few times I was with you, the thought approached my mind that I ought to suggest some arrangement for return of my two last emergency advances and gradual return of those covering a larger period. I did not let it enter, however, because I cherished (as part of my esteem for you) an assumption that the making of returns on your part as soon as it should become at all possible would be even more automatic and spontaneous than the advances had been. I have had strong expectations of hearing from you during the first few days of this month and am still thinking some communication must be on its way to me.
I think my reluctance to be the first to communicate would prevail if it were not that I find myself at present giving without considerable pleasures and advantages that I had expected to enjoy.
I hope you are finding your ______________ the Government work that there is no great danger of it drawing you away from your ambitions and future independence.
Sincerely,
S.H.
