Carbon of a letter to Dr. John B. Rae, Department of Humanities, Harvey Mudd College of Science and Engineering, Claremont, California relative to Dr. Rae’s gathering data for a history of the aircraft industry
May 24, 1960
Dear Dr. Rae:
Your letter of the 13th concerning history of the aircraft industry caught up with me a short time ago.
Mrs. Manning sets much store upon my early work in connection with aircraft development which I discontinued for other interests and to look with even greater expectations towards the certain fulfillment of another age-old dream of man. This has made aeronautics — and even astronautics — relatively less interesting. So I have kept few records for “remembrance of things past” and some of these were lost in a fire a few years ago. However, Mrs. Manning, on her own, has been digging with diligence into my engineering background and she tells me, happily, that she will make available to you whatever she has or can. Also, I have commissioned my grandson, Spencer MacCallum, to make an attic exploration this coming weekend when he returns from New York and you will be very welcome indeed to whatever of interest can be found.
Your letter is a welcome reminder of a very pleasant visit with you which I hope can be repeated before very long.
Sincerely yours,
Spencer Heath
