Carbon of letter from 420 W. 116th Street, New York City, to Harry Scherman, whose book Heath admired, at 385 Madison Avenue, NYC
February 20, 1942
Dear Mr. Scherman:
Since first reading your “Promises That Men Live By”, and knowing something of your latest contribution in the field of human and social relationships, I feel that the outline and formulation of my very similar observations are very much in the general line of your own interest and thought, my own views being of a much more general scope.
At any rate, from my very pleasant recollection of our luncheon conversation some time ago I feel that it may not be amiss to call your attention to the material that I have gotten together in a somewhat systematic, and I hope not too unliterary form. I am not submitting this manuscript to you with a view to its publication by the Book of the Month Club. I believe that it will have a very strong but a restricted and not very wide appeal. I am therefore leaving it with your secretary, believing that if you are kind enough to give it a casual inspection you will find it sufficiently interesting to give me some advice or suggestion as to the best persons with whom it may be placed, with a view to publication in its present or possibly in an amended form.
Entirely apart from the merits of this current manuscript I should be very happy to enjoy again your conversation upon some of the topics in which we are both deeply interested.
Since I am obliged to leave New York next Wednesday at the latest, I trust there will be an opportunity of seeing you at least briefly before that time.
My address here in New York is the King’s Crown Hotel, 420 West 116th Street. The telephone is UNiversity 4-2700.
Very truly yours,
SH/t Spencer Heath
