Letter to Heath at 11 Waverly Place, New York City 3, from Crane Brinton, Harvard University, Department of History, 98 Widener Library, Cambridge MA
October 10, 1945
Dear Mr. Heath:
I have been in Government service in England and France since November 1942 and have only just succeeded in getting back to my much pleasanter normal life. On my return I found your letter and article on Henry George. I am sorry to have missed you in your last two visits to Boston. The chances are I shall be here from now on. I am pretty sure I shan’t get to New York before the first of the year, but when I do I shall let you know. Meanwhile, if you come to Boston you can always get me at 98 Widener Library.
As you can imagine, I find a lot of work to catch up with. Perhaps you’ll excuse me if I put off reading what I am sure is your very interesting review of Henry George until I make a bit more headway with the annoying odds and ends I have to clean up. Within a few weeks at worst I hope to be back to normal and then I should be delighted to have a look at your “Energy Concept of Population” if you have it ready at that time.
I think my absence served fairly effectively to cut the ties between me and the SRL. I haven’t seen the SRL recently but it was clearly getting pinker even before I left. I suppose you can’t build up a big circulation unless you bellyache about something either from the point of view of the Left or the Right. The middle of the road is a dull path apparently.
Sincerely yours,
(signed) Crane Brinton
