Letter to Heath at Science of Society, 11 Waverly Place East, New York City 3, from William E. Fort, Jr. (Department of Philosophy, Rollins College), 1951 Forrest Road, Winter Park, Florida
May 22, 1953
Dear Mr. Heath:
Thank you very much for your nice letter of May 20.
I enjoyed very much reading your thoughtful observations concerning Dr. McCrady’s book. I hope I may be able to meet the gentleman someday. His thought sounds stimulating and I expect that I would find many points in common. I am not, however, in accord with the notion of a “Group Mind” considered as an hypostasis. To me, God is the perfect Being and inspiration of men but God does not include men within himself. If he did then men would have no freedom. I feel that God is a leader and not a dictator of men. I object, you see, to anything that might conceivably subject men to slavery. The “City of God” and men is, I believe a free society led toward voluntary cooperation by ideals and values inherent in God.
The suggestion you made to Dean Walker concerning a study you describe as “Socionomy” sounds very interesting indeed. I do hope that you and Dean Walker will be able to work out something along the lines you suggested. You will doubtless hear from him within the next week or so.
It is always a pleasure to see you and I always feel that I have gained something from our conversations. I particularly enjoyed our discussions of this year.
Mrs. Fort joins me in sending our best regards to you.
Cordially yours,
(signed) William E. Fort, Jr.
