Letter to Edwin R. Walker, Rollins College, Winter Park, Florida
December 11, 1953
Dear Dr. Walker:
Quite a lot of time has run by since I had so much pleasure in the communication of ideas between us in regard to the social function of a liberal arts college and related topics.
I would like very much to go further into these matters with you and your associates and perhaps plant a few seeds of creative thinking in the minds of some of your classes or serious seminars. My qualifications in most fields are more by nature than by formal preparation. However, in the field of law I find myself qualified as to academic background as well, being a member of the bar of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia and holding Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the National University in Washington, D.C.
Might it be of some value to your institution in its department of social sciences or of applied philosophy for me to conduct a series of informal seminars centered about the social significance of the Common Law? If acceptable to you I should be most happy to do this during the eight to twelve months that I shall be in Winter Park. As to compensation I shall be very happy to return to the college by way of donation a sum at least sufficiently large to offset any amount that you should feel fitting to assign to me. Concerning the dates and hours of seminars would rest of course entirely on your discretion.
To yourself and Mrs. Walker I shall wish to extend my happiest Christmas wishes, and to include in this, by your kindness, Doctor Hannah and Doctor and Mrs. Fort as well.
Sincerely yours,
SH:sm
