Carbon of letter, August 23, 1956, to E. Merrill Root, 3221 Berwyn Lane, Richmond, Indiana, with response from Root, October 7, 1956, at R.R. #1, North Grosvenordale, Connecticut
Dear Mr. Root: August 23, 1956
I continue to read from time to time your various contributions to our libertarian literature. I often think how wonderful it would be to have you for a neighbor, not to say intimate friend. Do you ever come to Washington, Baltimore or New York? My place is in Baltimore on the edge of the city and not very far from Washington, and I visit New York frequently, where I have kept a small apartment a good many years. I would like to know something of your plans whenever you are traveling this way.
You might happen to know Professor Donald Andrews, Chairman of the Department of Chemistry at John Hopkins. He is studying the frequency of atomic vibrations as orchestrated in molecules and transformed into sonic vibrations in their relation to our musical chords and compositions — a possible key to the inner nature of the physical universe. He seems a very wonderful personality.
My own researches on the universe of interfunctioning men and its harmonies are well on the way to publication, and I look forward to sharing them with you. Your sonnets and other verse continue to inspire me from time to time, and this little note is just a matter of acknowledging our spiritual accord.
Sincerely,
SH/m

Dear Mr. Heath: October 7, 1956
Your gracious and delightful letter came, alas, too long ago. I meant to answer at once, but the world is too much with me — at least I have been working all summer on a terrific project (and am still working on it). I have a grant for half a semester to finish a book which should normally take a year or more. So I have had little time or energy left; consequently the delight of correspondence with rare wonderful friends like you has been curtailed.
I haven’t gotten away, except on taut schedules for speaking. Thus I didn’t get to accept your invitation and stop in; I would love to.
We shall be here till about Nov. 1st., then return to 3221 Berwyn Lane, Richmond, Indiana.
This has been a marvelous Fall here. It is my favorite time of year; this time, the colors are terrible as an army with banners all over the hills. They take one’s breath and one’s heart.
I rejoice in your work. Science is beyond the limited capacity of my mind, but I acclaim one who can voyage such perilous seas as a master.
It is always good to hear from you. Our “spiritual accord” is close and rich.
Most cordially,
/s/ E. Merrill Root
