Carbon of letter of November 12, 1956, to Douglas MacKinnan, followed by a penned letter to Heath of November 14, 1956,

from W. Langlie

Dear Mr. MacKinnan:                    November 12, 1956

It was certainly wonderful of you to let us have those six tickets to hear Mr. Nadas play so beautifully. Spencer and I had with us Arthur C. Holden, a very famous architect of New York, and his wife, and two close friends of the Unitarian Minister, Dr. Walter Kring, who, and his wife, greatly regretted they could not themselves come.

The Herald Tribune review seemed to me technically excellent, but was a little disappointing in the moderation of its over-all appreciation. We discussed the music at some length afterwards, and so far as we were concerned, it was beyond praise. The audience was very appreciative, and we all enjoyed the three encores with which he graciously responded.

We are certainly indebted to you for a wonderful evening, as also are our friends.

Sincerely,

SH/m

Encl.

Dear Mr. Heath:                       November 14, 1956

I wish to thank you for your kind generosity in giving me two tickets for Mr. Nadas’ program, which I’d like to discuss with you. I was sorry that we had to be cut off when I called.

When you told me you were leaving town on the 16th, my first reaction was to ask if you would let me sublet your apartment because you have a piano! However, I thought it was better if I did not, and have found an apartment house in which I may have a piano.

I enjoyed our day together. Since I’ve spent most of my time since then looking for an apartment, I’ve not read any of your writing which you kindly gave me. It is right before me here at my desk and I intend to read it all.

Perhaps I shall see you again when you are back in town. I regret that you cannot see and hear Beethoven’s Fidelio which not only has a text of the highest moral, or spiritual, quality, but contains some of the greatest music ever written.

 Until next time,

Gratefully,

/s/ W. Langlie
