Carbon of letter to Max Wykes-Joyce, c/o 8 Elm Road, Lyndhurst, Evesham, Worcestershire, England

March 8, 1957

Dear Max,

I remember very happily your visit to me in New York quite a long time ago and I have been pleased to hear through your aunt, Nelly Lycett, and her close friend, Ada Lynes MacCallum, both of whom I am very fond, that you have made some very happy progress in the field of journalism.

This moves me to send you a copy of a proposed solution of the Suez Canal impasse that I have been publicizing a bit in this country with some quite gratifying response. I am now preparing to do the same in England as soon as I can obtain or prepare a good mailing list for over there. Please examine this proposal of a strictly non-political proprietary administration of the Canal and let me know what you think of it. If you think well of it please draw it to the attention of some of your professional associates with a view to its being further publicized abroad, with or without any reference or credit to me or to my organization.

It may be that you could help me obtain the names and addresses of more or less public and influential persons whom I can address directly. Scientists, writers, philanthropists and outstanding persons in government and public affairs.

The first four hundred of these proposals sent out from here brought almost one hundred replies, all favorable. The Hollywood, California (Los Angeles) CITIZEN-NEWS (circulation 340,000) published on February 28th a double-column editorial leader nearly eight inches long quoting the Canal proposal almost in full and giving it highest praise. It seems likely that other important publications will follow suit. Many have been circularized but it is too early as yet to know the full effect.

Your own special tendency in the direction of art criticism and art history interests me very much. I wish I could make some connections in that field. My grandson and associate, Spencer Heath MacCallum, majored along those lines in Princeton and I shall speak with him about it and you very soon.

I shall be most happy to hear from you, not only concerning my own project in aid of world affairs but also in regard to your own professional prospects, progress and affairs.

Sincerely,
