Letter from Edmund A. Opitz, Foundation for Economic Education, Irvington-on-Hudson, New York

June 7, 1957

Dear Spencer:

I enjoyed reading the copy of the address which you gave to the recent meeting of the Christian Freedom Foundation. You certainly gave the men something to think about and I hope many of them will follow through.

I haven’t had time yet to read your book but I should be taking it with me on my trip to California next week, and expect to have it read by the time I see you. It is good to know that both you and Spencer will be with us at the seminar. I shall have to miss the first couple of days but I shall see you on the 19th.

Mr. Read is in the Midwest this week but I know he will be interested in reading your speech when he returns. He was especially struck by references you made in a letter some weeks ago likening the market economy to the kingdom of the golden rule. In case you have not seen his most recent reprint, I am enclosing it. On the back cover you will see a new phrasing of the FEE idea which makes use of your thought.

I have a copy of “The Modern Symposium” and I will see that Leonard has a chance to look at it. It says many interesting things but also contains a number of ideas that I did not like.

  With all best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Edmund A.
