Letter from Virgil Jordan, Aurora, West Virginia, July 15, 1957, with Heath’s response of July 23, 1957

Dear Mr. Heath:

When I had the happy surprise of getting that advance copy of your book just before I left New York early in June for my summer retreat here in a log cabin atop the Alleghenies, I thought I would be able — as I have so often in my many past years of book reviewing — to read it and write you about it much sooner than this…. but I found it so stimulating, so fruitful of suggestion, so penetrating in its perception that I have not yet exhausted its content, and it will probably occupy my thoughts for the rest of the summer. So I must not longer postpone this note to thank you warmly for your thoughtfulness in bringing to my attention something I would greatly regret having missed. I am deeply grateful for your kindness.

Yours sincerely,

                       (signed) Virgil Jordan

Dear Dr. Jordan:                           July 23, 1957

It is hard for me to express to you my gratification upon receiving your letter of July 15th. For I must say that many times while writing my “engineer’s report” on our voluntary society, I had hopeful pictures in my mind that it would receive favorable attention from persons of high standing in our business and industrial world, among whom I thought always specifically of you as the archetype. So you can understand my delight in having the dream so far come true.

Nor a great many responses have been received, but it occurs to me that you mightlike to see what has been said up to now by several other persons whose opinions I prize. Accordinly, I enclose excerpts from letters received from several of these.

 Again thanking you, I remain

Sincerely yours,

SH/m

For an outline of the bare mechanics of what I anticipate as the eventual community organization, I enclose “NOTES ON THE ORGANIZATION OF REAL ESTATE”.
