Letter from Felix Wittmer with clipping of a Wall Street Journal ad attached

August 5, 1957

Dear Mr. Heath:

It occurred to me that someone ought to write a little

book about yourself – your life, your thoughts, and that which

makes you stand out as an American to whom wholesome people

want to listen. You may already have chosen someone much

better qualified for the job than I am, but I wanted you

to know that I have been thinking about this for several weeks.

I think I could work this in nicely along with the book on

Civilization. If the job is bigger than I think, the textbook

might have to wait.

The ad in today’s WALL STREET JOURNAL might interest you. Much can be done to help both management and labor, from the viewpoint of free enterprise. (Bulletins, little monthlies etc.] I think the job would be quite creative. As I do not have the good contacts, this may not lead to anything, though.

I trust that you won’t mind my candid letter of the other day.

Such personalism, I believe, is my reaction to the increasing mechanization and de-humanization of our era.

With all good wishes, Cordially,

(signed) Felix Wittmer.

P.S. By the way, it was our mutual friend, Howard Kershner, who suggested that I write to you re the textbook.
