Carbon of letter to Edward McCrady, Chancellor, The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee
August 22, 1957
Dear Dr. McCrady:
It was for a long time my idea that you would be one of the very first persons to whom I should like to present a copy of my CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR. However, it is not clear from my records whether or not I did so. I am therefore now sending you a copy on the chance that I may not have done so before. I think you will find in it a great deal of what Mark twain calls “the gold of our own opinion in a fellow heap of dust” — although from an entirely new and, I think, uniquely constructive point of view.
I should be delighted to have your reaction to it in any form, especially if it should take the form of comments in the Sewanee Review or other appropriate publication.
I hope also that my paper read before the Annual Meeting of The Christian Freedom Foundation last May (and particularly well received) has come to your attention by now.
With many happy wishes for Sewanee and all that it stands for, and with many personal regards,
Sincerely yours,
SH/m
