Carbon of letter to Russell Kirk, Mecosta, Michigan
September 24, 1957
Dear Dr. Kirk:
I have been exceedingly interested in the first number of “MODERN AGE – A CONSERVATIVE REVIEW” under your editorship and am looking forward to succeeding issues. The article by Dr. Morley in particular is an exceedingly brilliant presentation of the present situation in our national and world affairs.
It occurs to me that a review of my recently published CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR would be very appropriate. Accordingly, I am sending to you as Editor a copy of this volume, together with extracts from letters that have been so far received, with request that it be considered for review. I happen to know that John Chamberlain would be glad to write such a review if it could be considered appropriate in view of his already contributed a Foreword to the book. He would, of course, make some engaging reference to his possible disqualification.

The above was dictated over a month ago, but held up until my return from Virginia today.
I am happy now to reply to your letter of August 7th, which makes me even more pleased to send you the review copy above referred to and extracts from letters of commendation that have been received. In addition to these, Mr. R.C. Hoiles has been writing very cordially and has devoted his full columns to review on two separate occasions.
Hoping you have been enjoying your European conferences, and with many hopes for the Modern Age — in both senses.
Cordially yours,
SH/m
