Letter to Spencer MacCallum

May 3, 1954

Dear Spencer:

Well, I haven’t very much to report, nothing definite. Things haven’t come to any jell here and now they are talking of next year. Want me to outline a course of lectures with synopsis of each one for the College authorities to consider for next winter. Maybe I will.

That writing of mine, inspired by Lawrence Brown got off to several different starts and then got entirely to big for a short article. Almost like a re-writing of CM&A from the religious and historical point of view. After two or three false starts, I made a really good synopsis of each of Brown’s paragraphs. This shows up his subtle Church propaganda sharply. Then I made some elaborate topical outlines, from 10,000 B.C. forward. Got quite enamored of the whole scheme. Then after transcribing some 20 pages I got bogged down and for days and days couldn’t seem to get going at all. Guess I need somebody to talk it all over with so I could see the coherent pattern vividly — and so it goes.

I expect to leave here most any day now. I wrote and wired to Dr. McCrady and have a very cordial reply with date for visiting him May l3th. So please address me there at the Tuckaway Inn, Sewanee, Tenn. from and after about the time you get this. From there I will go to Winchester and Waterford and hope to see you. I have missed you a heap.

Your mother is all mixed up about her plans — whether she will stay in Virginia or go to Asia for a year. I hope she decides well and has luck. I’ve been mighty glad to hear about your interesting studies in college. Wish I could talk to you about them at length — and about my own too. I hope we can spend a lot of the summer together and do some traveling too. I haven’t much stomach for going to Michigan without you, especially if we should be going to California afterwards, maybe in a new car. What kind, do you suppose?

I’ve written a nice letter to Mrs. Dinon about fixing up the apartment. I thought it best to write to her first and see what she can get done for us. Anyhow, I haven’t been able to remember the name of the agents — something like Hammerman and Co.

Remember me to Mrs. Redlich and tell her she can write to me at Sewanee. I haven’t received any of those booklets from Sewanee. They are supposed to notify me when they are ready. I’m dropping them a line to hold them.

                           All my best,

                                       P. D.
