Penciling by Spencer MacCallum on notepad paper recalling an anecdote of Heath’s about Ethyl Clyde. Also on the same paper a pencil draft of letter to Shepard B. Clough as dictated to MacCallum by Heath, then crossed out probably to indicate it had been sent.
Around 1956
MacCallum writing: Heath and Ethyl Clyde (an atheist) were admiring a sunrise from her New York City apartment, she exclaiming at length about its beauty. Heath said, “If you want me to stop talking and writing about religion, then you’ve got to stop acting that way!”
/Heath once remarked that Mrs. Clyde, heiress of the Clyde Steamship Lines, liked it that whenever they went out for a meal, he always paid; many people would let her pay, thinking she could well afford to do so./
Dear Dr. Clough:
Since last seeing you I’ve been away from New York, chiefly in connection with the little Foundation I’ve established for the advancement of knowledge concerning the non-political practices and institutions upon which all our freedom and progress depends.
In this connection I’ve outlined a proposed solution along free enterprise lines of the current crisis concerning the Suez. Thinking this might be of interest to you in connection with your work or otherwise, I’m enclosing a copy for you. I’ll be much interested in any comments you may have, and in any case I look forward to the pleasure of seeing you again.
With many good wishes and pleasant recollections,
Cordially yours,
S.H.
