Letter to Heath from John J. Grebe, The Dow Chemical Company, Midland, Michigan, February 5, 1963, with reply from Spencer MacCallum, Department of Anthropology, University of Chicago, Chicago 37, Illinois

April 22, 1963

Dear Mr. Heath:

It has been a real treat to again read from your book “Citadel, Market and Altar,” during a spell of illness. It is interesting to realize how we have time to reflect and read when we are on our back.

I can’t help but wish that I had more material that you have written since publishing this book. If it is convenient, I would appreciate receiving any new information that may be available since I appreciate your philosophy very much.

Sincerely,

(Signed) John J. Grebe

Dear Dr. Grebe:

This is to thank you on behalf of my grandfather, Spencer Heath, for your kind letter of February fifth. Mr. Heath has been unable for the past year to attend to correspondence because of illness.

From having worked closely with him for a number of years, I can say that he thinks very highly of your ideas and general philosophic approach. Your letter gave him much pleasure.

There is a possibility that a small book of informal talks which he gave at Chapman College, in Orange, California, will be published before very long. These talks might be described as interpreting Christian theological principles in the light of our modern social and economic system, and vice versa, presenting one as the obverse of the other. I have transcribed and edited the talks from tape, and Dr. John L. Davis, president of Chapman College, is exploring means of publishing them. I shall certainly keep you informed of this, and if publication doesn’t go forward as quickly as hoped, I shall see if a typescript copy might not become available to send your way.

It would be a pleasure to meet you sometime when you are in Chicago.

Sincerely yours,

Spencer Heath MacCallum
