Carbon of letter to Mrs. Russell W. Davenport, 541 East 72nd Street, New York 21, New York
December 9, 1956
Dear Mrs. Davenport:
Thinking it will interest you to know something of the response to our proposal for a nonpolitical, free-enterprise solution of the Suez Canal problem, I am enclosing a number of extracts from letters received. All the replies have been favorable, none expressing any opposition or disapproval, notwithstanding the writers’ wide diversity of views in other respects. This suggests the unifying effect of a sound principle —- voluntary, nonpolitical administration.
My grandson and I have just returned from Chicago, where we attended a very inspiring Conference on “Work in Today’s World”, under auspices of Spiritual Mobilization of Los Angeles. We met many persons of prominence, all looking towards greater freedom in our public as well as private affairs. While there, we were entertained also by Henry Regnery, Prof. Von Hayek and John Lawrence Monroe, the Director of the Henry George School.
I expect to be in New York very soon for, among other things, a Conference with our friends of the Foundation for Economic Education at Irvington-on-Hudson, on the question — How can we pay the policeman (government) without any danger of becoming his slave? I look forward to the possibility of seeing you again.
Cordially yours,
SH/m
