Carbon of letter from Heath to Pierre F. Goodrich,

Electric building, Indianapolis, Indiana

September 25, 1957

Dear Mr. Goodrich:

Appreciating your wide influence on behalf of human freedom, and remembering your kind interest in my proposal of a strictly free-enterprise solution for the Suez Canal problem, it occurs to me that you might be interested in my much more generalized elaboration of the principle and philosophy of free enterprise as applied to public affairs.

Accordingly, I take great pleasure in presenting to you with my compliments an inscribed copy of my recently published CITADEL, MARKET AND ALTAR. I trust you will enjoy reading it and that you will be stimulated — perhaps also hopefully inspired — by some of its unusual points of view.

The matter of the Suez Canal is no longer under wide public discussion, and its solution is not being further publicized. However, in appreciation of its very thoughtful consideration by you, I am enclosing also extracts from some of the later responses that were received.

Very sincerely yours,

Spencer Heath

Typed copy of letter from Heath at 462 West Hall, Harvey Mudd College, Claremont, California, to Pierre Goodrich, Goodrich, Campbell & Warren, Electric Building, Indianapolis, Indiana

November 3, 1960

Dear Mr. Goodrich:

Our wonderful friend Dr. F.A. Harper has been so kind as to write to me about you wishing that we might get together on at least some of our common problems and ideals and perhaps some of our present or prospective tax woes.

My own ideas and ideals are largely indicated by the Statement of Purposes which I enclose. The most concrete of these is, as in Purpose numbered IV, to promote understanding of our Free Enterprise system and its potentialities, especially in relation to public administration.

For some time I planned to spend my energies and resources through my own tax-exempt Foundation. But now, since through ineptitude and neglect on the part of attorneys this Foundation was so organized and so conducted as unwittingly to disqualify it for tax-exempt status I now hope to be able to operate through one or more kindred tax-exempt organizations rather than begin all over again as the Treasury Department suggests and seems to require. And I am the more anxious to do something of this kind because of my advancing years and the capital gains taxes and the savage death duties now lurking my door.

The Foundation for Voluntary Welfare is aiding and encouraging development of the proprietary principle, notably in the hearts of our cities as in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I am hoping to be able to work with them towards a wide understanding of the principle involved in this growing alternative to political administration.

Our friend “Baldy” writes most glowingly of you and suggesting the possibility that I and my grandson, Spencer MacCallum, now a graduate student in social anthropology and who is very close to me, might meet with you preferably on the West Coast if, as he says, “enough of us could make it worth his while. I will be delighted indeed if anything of that kind can be arranged.

Here in the West I seem to have found academic circles more receptive to advanced understandings of our Free Enterprise system and its vast potentialities in the public realm. Hence my present somewhat informal connection in a quasi faculty capacity at the Harvey Mudd College of Science and Engineering here in Claremont, and some other foot-in-door contacts in Southern California.

With my very high regard indeed,

Sincerely yours,

Spencer Heath

Item 3083`

Letter to Heath at 462 West Hall, Harvey Mudd College of Science and Engineering, Claremont, California, from Pierre F. Goodrich, Goodrich, Campbell and Warren, Electric Building, Indianapolis, Indiana

December 29, 1960

Dear Mr. Heath:

I really must apologize for my exceedingly long delay in answering your friendly letter of November 3. I have been away from Indianapolis more than I have been here.

I appreciate the material you sent me and find it interesting reading.

At the present moment I am so loaded with problems beyond any expectation which will continue until after the first of May that I do not now see how I could go West.

I would like very much to go West because almost all the way between here and the West coast there are friends I would like to visit in their hometowns and I would enjoy very much visiting with you people.

If I am fortunate enough to get the things which I am committed to do done before next August I hope very much to attend the Mont Pelerin meeting in Italy the latter part of August and September.

There is another problem which exists. While I have one foundation going and qualified, the one which from all I hear would likely be most interesting to you in our discussion will probably not be fully satisfactorily worked out until 1962. I have every belief that what I am doing is sufficiently sound that it will be fully approved but at the present moment it would be unwise to base any considerable plans on it.

I would like very much to have us keep in contact with each other. If something happens to change my situation I will immediately let you know but if it does not I would hope very much we could sit down and talk about this sometime in 1962.

I am sending a copy of this letter to Dr. Harper. I am glad to hear of another person who has such a high regard of him. It is always a real experience to discuss problems which he is able to discuss and I am sure from what he says of you it would be equally rewarding if we could get together. As busy as we both seem to be at the present moment, however, I hope you will understand that I am unable to follow through at the present time.

I told Dr. Harper that I would enjoy very much talking with you but at the time I did so I did not fully realize your problems and also I did not realize that the delay of solving my own problems would be quite as long as it now seems likely to be.

Therefore, I think that unless something unusual turns up the suggestion I make may be the better part of wisdom.

Pierre F. Goodrich
