Not many have come to see that the individual can only realize himself in the collectivity. But he must realize himself functionally, not under coercion — as in the “welfare state,” where some are coerced and some are done for, and neither group functions necessarily.

It is in his nature to be reciprocal with his fellow men under the Golden Rule of loving through serving, not the iron rule of force and destruction. Since it is man’s nature to be reciprocal with his fellow man, he cannot fulfill himself except by advancement in that relationship. Thus only can he be free. Thus only can he be himself.

Our rabid individualists can’t get that. They think that because it ruins men to cooperate coercively, they should not cooperate spontaneously in the freedom of self-fulfillment.
