Second of three texts composed for a Christmas card (see Items 2018, 2020)

1961?

The Christ taught men how to seek not mere security or salvation but the way to ever more and more abundant life. He who only sought to save what life he had would surely lose. But for him who would live more richly and abundantly, there was a joyous WAY OF LIFE, even unto endless length of days.

The old WAY was negative. When not predatory, then it was either defensive or supinely endured — all negative to the onward march of LIFE. The new and positive mode of doing brought hope. It would be CREATIVE and spiritual, dominant and divine. The Great Command was, resist not evil, but turn away from Caesar’s public benevolence and one-world peace maintained by force, and enter into the creative freedom of Contract and Exchange, each thereby doing unto all others as he would have them to do unto him.

This is the Christ’s Golden Rule by which men, in mutual freedom mutually serve, yet do not enslave and do not destroy. When we have learned to practice His Golden Rule in our public services, as we have learned in our private enterprises and affairs, then, at last, in the joy of His full freedom we shall celebrate and honor Him.

/Earlier version?:/

The Christ taught men to seek not mere security or salvation but the way to ever more and more abundant life. He who only sought to save the life he had would surely lose … But for him who would live more richly, and abundantly, there was a joyous way of life, even unto endless length of days.

The old way was negative; if not predatory then either non-resistant or defensive — all negative to life by diminishing it. The new mode of life would be creative and thereby spiritual, dominant and divine. The one great command was to resist not but to turn away from (political) Caesar’s world-peace and benevolence resting on force and enter into the creative, mutual freedom of contract and exchange, each doing thereby unto all others as he would have them do unto him.

This is the Christ’s Golden Rule by which men, in mutual freedom, mutually serve, yet do not enslave or destroy. When we have learned to practice this Golden Rule in our public services, as we now do in our private enterprises and affairs, then at last in His full freedom shall we celebrate and honor Him.
