I see men stalking game for food

where buried cities lie

I see them stalk each other there

and from each other fly

There is no safety on the plains

where food and game abound

And in the hills starvation kills

when refuge there is found.

 

I see men living fearful lives

and only few contrive

to thread the narrow path between

the dead and the alive —

Where dire compulsion is the law

for all beneath the sky

And every man for his short span

must live a slave or die.
