Carbon of letter from Heath to Thaddeus Ashby, 1521 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles 17, California

May 16, 1956

Dear Thaddeus Ashby:

Your letter received April 23rd has been a disappointment to me.

In mine of November 20th, I invited your thoughtful attention to a self-sustaining alternative to political and coercive dominance (and ultimate totalitarian tyranny) in the conduct of community affairs — namely, proprietary administration, which is basically contractual and creative.

I was prompted to this by such of your writings as the dramatic dialogue in Faith & Freedom between you and your tough-talking interlocutor in which Conscience suggested there might be such an alternative and you might find it, if you would but seek diligently and in the faith of there being a divinely sanctioned way of freedom from force and towards a more abundant life.

I have spent, so far, a good deal of money (besides other things) in pursuit of this self-sustaining hence durable and real alternative to the political, and expect to spend more, looking to the mobilization of spiritual (creative) power.

Unsupported image type.     In my letter to you, I omitted intentionally any reference to money; but in your reply I find but little, if any, mention of anything else. Loaves and fishes truly one must have, even for the body (as Emerson would say) meanly to live. For more than this, one must have, first of all, inspiration from above and all else will be added. Please forgive the homily and take a second thought — perhaps even a second look. John Chamberlain might tell you something .. if asked.

Sincerely,

SH/m
