Carbon of letter to Arthur W. Madsen, 94 Petty France, London, S.W.1, England

July 14, 1932

Dear Mr. Madsen:

I am just lately returned from Toronto and Detroit to find your letter of June 21st and the copy of Protection and Free Trade which you kindly sent. I also have a letter from Mr. Ashley Mitchell and I have made arrangements to meet him in New York about the 28th. It was very kind of you to suggest to him and to me the possibility of our meeting in Toronto or New York.

I shall never forget the pleasure I received from Mr. Paul and yourself and also the delight of knowing Mr. Lester and Mr. Gardener. I have for many years felt a close relationship with Mr. Paul as an institution; it seemed quite a fulfillment that I should come to know him as a person and be so cordially entertained. I have mentioned to Mr. Mitchell my eager expectation of being able to make a longer visit in London within the next two years.

I am glad indeed to know that Mr. and Mrs. Paul were at Leamington and that you and Mrs. Madsen had such a delightful visit with them there. I was in Leamington twice. It seemed a most delightful place for recreation and reinvigoration. I hope Mr. Paul will continue treating himself well and that he may be crowned with many years.

Tell Mr. Paul it is a practical certainty that I will meet Mr. Hennessey (as he wished) upon my next visit to New York.

I am telling everyone I meet about the pleasure I had in touring over the greater part of England and was mentioning again only today how perfectly at home everything seemed to me and how I felt that I could settle down in almost any part of England, especially the central and southern parts or the Lake District, and feel that I had always lived there — as, in fact, I have, a great deal in imagination.

With the best of regards to you all,

Sincerely,
