Copy of letter from 19 North Washington Street, Winchester, Virginia, to Mr. Gladwin Bouton

Dear Mr. Bouton:

I received your letter from Tenafly and enclosures for which I thank you. Your proposed circular letter seems O.K. to me without any use being made of my name in it. The proposed letter to Mr. Buttenheim I think is very good. I would like you to send it to Mr. Buttenheim for me. His criticisms were keenly made and I think they are answered adequately.

I expect to come to New York early in September. Will be glad to talk things over with you and also, I hope, with Mr. Hall and see what we can do about getting the Schantz letter or similar material into circulation among substantial interests. Between us we may devise some plan to make these interests pay a little something for their enlightenment and meantime perhaps we can raise a few dollars to “prime the pump.”

Looking at land value as a product resulting from wealth production and rising and falling with that production clears up the true relation between land ownership and the “single tax.” It also sheds important light upon several other relations that are quite widely misconceived or generally obscured.

I am eager to make contact with persons or small groups who would be interested to discuss the present actualities of the business and economic organization. Just to get a good look at things as they really are, I think, is more valuable than urging remedies for they will then be obvious and suggest themselves without argument or advocacy.

I hope you and your family and Mr. Hall are all well. I’ll be at Elkridge from tonight to the end of the week and then to Williamsburg, thence Winchester and again Elkridge about September 4.
