Carbon of letter from Heath to Mr./Mrs. Joe Shelby Riley, 616-19 Woodward Building, Washington DC
February 4, 1940
Dear Doctor and Mrs. Riley:
I do not know when I have ever had such a delightful impromptu visit with anyone as the visit Miss Leighton and I had with you yesterday morning. It was certainly an inspiration to meet two such live minded and emotionally coordinated persons, and so much a spirit of helpfulness and joy. I look forward to having the pleasure of seeing you again before very long.
Miss Leighton and I kept the appointment with Dr. and Mrs. Curtis which you so kindly arranged for us, and there again we had a most inspiring and delightful time. Their field of thought and activity is one of exceedingly great interest to both of us, and they were certainly very kindly attentive to my expression of my own very special interest in connection with an understanding of the actual organization of society in terms of its present functioning, and not in terms of its failure so to do.
Notwithstanding my specific and intense interest along this line, I am still perfectly aware that back of every physical manifestation there is a metaphysical pattern, essence, and ultimate reality. Nothing can be more fascinating than to trace out the metaphysical principles in accordance with which all objective manifestations take place. It is my own preference, in the spirit of modern science, to make careful examination of the objective phenomena of society and from the uniformities of process found in the social structures to deduce the metaphysical principles from which they flow.
I feel very grateful to you for having received your friendship, and for so kindly facilitating my acquaintance with others of similar spirit.
Sincerely yours,
SH:ML
