Carbon of a letter from Heath to Murray N. Rothbard, New York City.
July 22, 1957
Dear Dr. Rothbard:
Many thanks for yours of the 13th with mimeograph copy of your rejoinder to the land confiscationalists. It is good that you have drawn their fire and answered it forthrightly, although perhaps a little academically for their kind of understanding.
It is too much for them that government — in economics — cannot allocate anything but special privilege at the common cost and to the general detriment. They cannot see that, in the words of their own prophet, their proposed single tax would be only another one of those “schemes of taxation which drain the wages of labor and the earnings of capital as the vampire bat is said to suck the lifeblood of its victim” (Progress and Poverty, Anniversary Edition, 1953, p. 428).
It was nice to see you and Mrs. Rothbard at Irvington not long ago, not forgetting George Reisman whom also I was glad to see again.
Cordially yours,
SH/m
