Penciled draft of a letter on four-ring binder paper to Adam Schantz
1934?
Original is missing.
Dear Mr. Schantz
Shortly after receiving your kind letter of last September 17th I prepared a reply to this but did not send it immediately because I wanted to go over it with a view to further revision or improvement.
However, I was called away by the sudden death of a very near relation and had only just returned to New York when I was again called away by the bereavement of a very close friend and former associate. Following upon this came the nervous breakdown of my principal associate in New York and I have just returned home from having some diagnostic services at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore. You may judge from this that my apparent neglect of your letter was due to other causes than lack of interest or lack of appreciation of the attention you have so kindly given to my ideas on tax exemption policies.
I am sending herewith my letter as it was written on September 22nd last with an extra copy for your Chicago Associate.
Very truly yours,
