Tentative Rules for a Prize Essay Contest

 

ANGLO-SAXON COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION

 

Write an essay of not more than 10,000 words, des­cribing in terms of its basic operation the essentials of Anglo-Saxon community organization as it was best exempli­fied between (date) and (date) and as contrasted with Norman and classical public administration. Describe the basic essentials of Anglo-Saxon freedom and its relation to their mode of public administration, giving particular attention to the role played by the institution of property in land and its administration under northern European nations and especially in England during the Saxon period. Make a functional analysis of Anglo-Saxon social organiza­tion, describing the interrelationships existing among the various social institutions, including especially the insti­tution of land and its administration, as they contributed to the over-all functioning of the Anglo-Saxon community organization.

 

The sum of one thousand dollars ($l,000.00) will be divided among the three winning essayists in such proportion as will be decided by the judges according to the respective merits of their prize essays.

“Anglo-Saxon Community Organization”

 

     Anglo-Saxon organization, its modus operandi, and fundamentally con­trasted with Norman and Classical public administration.

 

     Anglo-Saxon public administration, public revenues. As it was best exempli­fied in England between (date) and (date).

 

     The basic essentials of Anglo-Saxon freedom and its relation to their mode of public administration, as fundamentally contrasted with the founding principles of all Norman and Classical organization as it has come down to the present day. Give particular reference in the case of Anglo-Saxon organization to the adminis­tration of land. Particular attention to the role played by the institution of property in land and its administration under northern European nations and especially in England during the Saxon period.

 

     A functional analysis of Anglo-Saxon social organization, describing the interrelationships existing among the various social institutions, including especially the institution of land and its administration, as they con­tributed to the over-all functioning of the Anglo-Saxon community organization. The contestant may at his discretion contrast or compare Anglo-Saxon community administration with the administration of modern hotel “communities,” but this is not required.

 

     Write an essay of not more than 10,000 words and preferably less, describing in terms of its basic operation the essentials of A-S community organization as it was best exemplified . . and as contrasted with Norman . . .
