Carbon of letter to Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Arlington VT
January 10, 1957
Dear Mrs. Fisher:
It is a pleasure to have your note of January 8th with its happy comments on the Purposes of the Science of Society Foundation.
Regarding the quotation from Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, these words were spoken in an address entitled, “Law and the Court,” at a dinner of the Harvard Law School Association of New York on February 15, 1913, and published that same year in a volume entitled, Speeches by Oliver Wendell Holmes. Little, Brown, and Company, Boston. Also reproduced in the New York Times of October 15, 1945 — editorial, I think.
I have for many years admired your beautiful writing, especially in your earlier novels. I am afraid I have not kept up with them all. The spirit of them reminded me very much of Cora Harris in their spiritual and artistic implications. I venture to enclose a booklet of mine which I hope you will enjoy.
Cordially yours,
SH/m
